How many children are in a class?
There are 8 children in a class when the children are under 3 years of age. There are 20 - 24 children in a class at Toddler Town for children ages 3 to 5. (Our room size determines the number of children in the 3 to 5 year old category).
What is the child to teacher ratio?
There is 1 teacher for every 4 children under 3 years of age. There is 1 teacher for every 10 children ages 3 to 5. Those ratios are mandated by the Department of Public Health - Day Care Licensing Division for the State of Connecticut.
Are you a licensed center?
Toddler Town is licensed by the Department of Public Health - Day Care Licensing Division. We must adhere to numerous licensing standards and be prepared for on-site visits at any time.
What are your hours of operation?
Toddler Town is open from 6:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M.
Do you close for inclement weather?
We are only closed when it is impossible for staff to get to the center because of icy road conditions. If we are closed, it is announced on channels 3 and 8 - the closures run along the bottom of the television screen. As a general rule - if the schools in Waterbury are delayed, we open on time. If the schools in Waterbury are closed, we open at 8 A.M.
What is your vacation policy?
Parents of full time children are allowed one tuition-free week after being enrolled for a period of one year.
Can I visit the center during the day?
Parents are welcome and encouraged to visit the center any time of the day.
Do the children go outdoors for "outside" playtime?
The children go outside every day - in good weather, of course. The children usually go outside for 45 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon.
How to you prevent strangers from entering the building?
We have a locked center with alarms on every door. If we do not know the person at the door we inquire as to the nature of their business before allowing them into the center. We also have an assigned staff member who answers the doors from 1:30 P.M. until 5:30 P.M.
Will you toilet train children?
Once a parent has success in toilet training their child at home we will continue the training at the center.
What is your policy regarding illness?
If a child has a fever of 100 degrees, or has a runny nose with discharge that is anything but clear, or, if the child has a rash, or 3 loose bowel movements (or any other illness that is determined to be contagious) we contact the parent and ask that they pick up the child within an hour of the phone call. We may or may not (generally only in the case of "pink eye" or a rash) require a doctor's note stating that the child is not contagious before the child can return to the center. In most cases the child may return to the center within 24 hours of the end of the fever, diarrhea, etc.
Are there parent/teacher conferences?
Parents may speak to their child's teacher at any time. There are also regularly scheduled parent/teacher conferences.
What kind of background checks do you do on your staff?
Anyone working in a day care facility must have their fingerprints taken at the Police Department in the city in which they reside prior to employment. The fingerprints are forwarded to the Department of Public Health along with an "Authorization for Release of Information from DCF" form. We also contact former employers and attempt to verify any information that was supplied to us on the Employment Application.
Do you allow part time schedules?
No, not at this time.
Will you administer medications?
At the present time there are 10 staff members who have received their Medication Administration Certificate. (10 staff members are also CPR and First Aid certified). We do administer medication with the proper authorizations from both the child's physician and the parent. There are several forms that must be completed prior to the administration of any medication.
Do you celebrate holidays, including birthdays, with the children?
Yes - to all of the above. If you do not allow your child to celebrate holidays/birthdays, Toddler Town is not the place for your child as we do not feel it is right to exclude any child from our festivities.
